An Akure Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a teenager, Michael Adebayo, 18, to three years imprisonment for housebreaking and theft of a mobile phone worth N80,000.
Adebayo was convicted for unlawfully breaking into a residence situated at Owe Akala, Oke Aro area of Akure, the Ondo State, on May 14, 2025, around 9 p.m.
The court heard that the convict stole an Infinix Hot201 smartphone, valued at N80,000, belonging to one Victor Promise.
Police prosecutor, Adebayo Sulaiman, told the court that the offences contravened Sections 383, 390(10), and 412 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
When the charges were read to him, Adebayo pleaded guilty, prompting the prosecutor to urge the court to impose a punishment that would serve as a deterrent to others.
Delivering his judgment, Magistrate Damilola Sekoni described the act as a grave offence and consequently sentenced the defendant to three years in prison without an option of fine.
