Tension in Ondo community as herders machete farmer
There was palpable tension and anxiety in the agrarian community of Ikakumo Akoko, Akoko North East local government, when a 40-year-old farmer, identified as Mr Idowu Bayode was machetted by two herdsmen in his farm.
Information reaching The Hope Metro revealed that the development has made some farmers in the area to stay away from their farms for fear of being killed due to the incessant farmers-herders clashes.
Narrating his ordeal to newsmen on his hospital bed, the victim said he went to his cashew plantation, but met two persons already plucking the cashew into sacks.
“On sighting me, they suddenly attacked me with their cutlases while I cried for help.
“My brother later came and saw me in a pool of blood as the herdsmen had inflicted deep cuts on me.
The chairman of Ikakumo Development Council (IDC), Mr Festus Omogboye said there was siege on Ikakumo as the people were now afraid to go to their own farms and markets.
Also a community leader, Prince Foluso Aminu condemned the incident calling on government to beef up security in the area being a border town with Edo State.
The Ikare divisional police officer, SP Olatujoye Akinwande, who confirmed the incident, said one person has been arrested in connection with the case.
