Tension gripped residents of Moremi Estate in Ile-Ife, Osun State, in the early hours of Monday following a violent robbery at D&D Hostel, where a Part 4 student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) was brutally attacked by suspected armed robbers.
According to information the incident, which occurred between 12:45 a.m. and 1:00 a.m., marked the third robbery within the Moremi axis in recent weeks.
Reports said Monday’s assault has been described as the most brutal so far, leaving the victim with a deep machete wound to the head.
The injured student, a final-year scholar from the Department of Material Science, was promptly rushed to the hospital, where he received treatment and was later discharged.
The violent incident has thrown the hostel community into panic, as students and residents voice growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the area.
However, Comrade Olaore David, Director of Security and Project Delivery to the Office of the National Vice President (South-West) of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), has launched immediate action to address the insecurity.
Alongside the Chief Security Officer of the Great Ife Students’ Union, AbdulRoheem Arogundade, and with support from two police patrol teams from the Moore and Modakeke Divisional Police Stations, Olaore paid a visit to the D&D Hostel. The team met with the assaulted student and other residents, who recounted the harrowing incident.
Kolokolo, as he is popularly known, assured the student community of intensified efforts to restore peace and prevent further attacks.
“We have commenced a joint surveillance operation with the police and other security operatives to uncover the escape routes and entry points being exploited by the criminals,” he stated.
He also revealed that a dedicated emergency contact line would soon be made available to enable students to swiftly report suspicious activity or request urgent assistance
