‘Thuggery, no longer tolerated at our Stadium’

The Government of Ondo State has warned those perpetrating thuggery at the Akure Sports Complex to desist from the act or face the wrath of the law.

Commissioner for Youths Development and Sports, Mr. Saka Yusuf Ogunleye made government stand known at a meeting with the management, coaches and of the Sports Council in Akure.

Ogunleye said their activities have been inimical to the progress of sports in the state.

“It is on record that our darling team, Sunshine Stars has been banished on a number of occasions in recent past due to unruly behaviour of these people.

Last season, three points were deducted from the club’s tally as a fall out of thuggery. This deduction caused the club to nosedive from the 10th to 17th position on Nigeria Premier League table.

And now that the team has been repositioned to do the state proud, those who constituted themselves to be clogs in the wheel of progress have to go.

The law will not spare anyone found conniving with thugs, who are tarnishing the image of the state.”

He thanked the team for doing the state proud by winning medals at various sporting events last year and the last National Sports Festival in Abuja.

“There is no doubt that the athletes that represented the state in wrestling, volleyball, judo and other events last year have done the state proud. The government is happy with all of them. Our boys and girls even went further by clinching close to 50 medals at the National Sports Festival. Governor Akeredolu and people of the state appreciate your efforts.”

The Commissioner implored them to do more this year, reiterating government readiness to continue sponsorship of sporting events so that Ondo would remain a pace setter.

The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. (Mrs) Dupe Eshiofonie, Directors in the Ministry while the Sports Council team was led by the General Manager, Chief Wande Fabuluje.
