Trader in court over N1.7m fraud

A 40-year-old businesswoman, Adesanmi Abosede, has been dragged before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo town, for fraudulently obtaining the sum of N1,700,000:00 from one Joke Akintimehin.

The police brought Abosede before the court on Friday for fraudulently collecting the money with false pretence to supply her foodstuff; rice, beans and vegetable oil which she fail to do so.

The defendant was alleged to have fraudulently received 150 bags of Nigeria rice valued at N3,300,000:00 under false pretence to pay a week later which she fail and also conduct herself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace.

The charge bothering on fraud and breach of peace, however, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against her.

The defendant was said to have committed the offence sometime in June 2022 in the Valentino area in Ondo, contrary to and punishable under sections 419 and 249(D) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

The prosecutor, inspector, Gbenga Akinsulure, who told the court that he would be calling three witnesses to testify in the case, applied for a date to enable him to study the case.

The defence counsel, Olamilekan Ibrahim applied for the bail of the defendant in most liberal terms.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs C.E Ijeh granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2,000,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ijeh adjourned the case till January 5, 2023, for hearing.
