For slapping a lady, a 30-year-old man, Chinedu Martins, has been remanded at Olokuta Correctional Centre, by a Family Magistrates’ Court sitting at Oke-Eda, in Akure.
The defendant was brought before Magistrate Folasade Aduroja, on two counts bothering on assault and breach of public peace.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Desmond Sosanya, the defendant committed the offences about noon on June 29, 2023, at Oke-ljebu, Akure.
Sosanya alleged that the defendant assaulted one Omowunmi Babaranti, by slapping her face.
Also, on same date, time and place, the defendant was said to have conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace at Groovy Hotel, Oke-ljebu, in Akure, being a public place.
The offences, prosecution stated, were contrary to Section 252 and punishable under Sections 351, 249 (d) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
The plea of the defendant was not taken for want of jurisdiction.
Hence, the prosecutor prayed for an order to remand him at the correctional centre.
Defence counsel, Isreal Tiwo, did not oppose the prosecutor’s application. But he prayed the court to grant his client bail.
However, Sonaya opposed the bail application, saying the defendant would abuse the privilege, if eventually granted.
Magistrate Aduroja, remanded the defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Centre, and adjourned the matter till September 22, 2023, for hearing.
