Trader stabs colleague to death, remanded

An Akure Magistrate Court on Thursday remanded a 32-year-old trader, Attairu Mustapha, at the Olokuta Correctional Centre, for allegedly stabbing his colleague to death.

Mustapha, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of murder.

Police prosecutor,  Simon Wada told the court that the defendant committed the crime at about 7:30 pm at Sabo Market Ore, on March 3, 2024.

Wada said the defendant allegedly killed one Uzairu Umaru,27, by stabbing him with a knife in the stomach.

He said the defendant was alleged to have accosted the victim who was his colleague, on their way home after a short disagreement between them.

“As a result, the victim sustained deep injury and was rushed to a Specialist Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor,”

The charge reads in part, “That you, Mustapha Attairu ‘m’ on March 3, 2024, at about 7.30 pm at Sabo Market Ore in Ondo State Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Uzairu Umaru  ‘m’ age 27 years old, by stabbing him with a knife in his stomach and thereby committed an offence, contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, Nigeria 2006.

The defendant’s plea was not taken.

Due to the nature of the offence, Wada, through an application urged the court to remand the defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Centre pending advice from the state Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The defence counsel prayed for an adjournment to enable the defendant reply to the application sought by the prosecution.

The Magistrate, Mr Kolawole A. Aro, ordered that Mustapha should remain behind bars and adjourned the case till April 19, 2024, for application and ruling.
