From Michael Ofulue, Osogbo

What was meant to be a joyous celebration turned into a heartbreaking tragedy as a retired headmistress,  Dupe Omowumi Bello, collapsed and passed away during her retirement ceremony.

The tragic incident occurred last week April 9, 2025, at the School for the physically challenged, Enu Odi, Ilesa, Osun State.

Reports indicated that Bello, revered by colleagues and students for her dedication and hard work, had recently concluded a long and distinguished career in education.

The ceremony was intended to honour her meritorious years of service, but it ended in shock and sorrow.

Sources revealed that she had just stepped down from her role as headmistress, where she had devoted herself to her students with unwavering passion.

Eyewitnesses revealed that Mrs. Bello arrived at the venue in high spirits, participating in a musical procession led by drummers.

“She was smiling and dancing. Everyone was filled with joy, no one anticipated what would happen next.”

According to attendees, “shortly after taking her seat at the high table with her husband, Mr. Bello began to exhibit signs of distress just minutes later.

“She looked fatigued as if she was struggling to breathe, people rushed to assist her.”

“First aid was administered on her, but as her condition worsened. She was swiftly transported to the nearby Ijesaland Geriatric Centre. Medical staff there referred her to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa, where she was pronounced dead on arrival,” she said.

The news of her passing spread quickly among the guests, many of whom left in shock, struggling to find words in the wake of the unexpected tragedy.
