Tragedy struck on Thursday morning, as nine members of a family reportedly lost their lives when a heavy truck crashed into a building in Okete village, Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.
The tragic incident occurred along the Otukpo-Oweto expressway, when the vehicle lost control and collided with the structure.
Weekend Hope gathered that the family members were asleep when the crash happened, leaving nine dead and several others with multiple injuries.
It was gathered from the source that the crash was as a result of brake failure, leading to the truck ramming into a building along the road.
According to a source, “The incident happened around 5am this morning when people were still sleeping. It was the noise of the crash that woke other neighbours.”
An eyewitness recounted that the cause of the accident remained unclear. “What led to the mishap is still a mystery as no one can ascertain the cause of the crash,” the source said.
However, some onlookers speculated that the lorry driver might have been under the influence of alcohol.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Benue State Command, Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident. She said, “The truck rammed into the house and killed the nine family members.”
She added that the command had launched a full-scale investigation into the incident and promised that further information would be made available to newsmen.
