The Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps, has arraigned two men, Monday Adesomoju and Michael Okunugba, on charges of burglary, theft, and illegal possession of firearms.
The duo were brought before Magistrate Damilola Sekoni on a seven-count charge, including conspiracy, burglary, stealing, and illegal possession of firearms.
The prosecution, led by state counsel C.C. Ude, disclosed that the alleged offences took place on May 10, 2024, around 9 p.m. at Halubi Street in Okitipupa, violating Sections 516, 411, 413, 428, 383, and 390 of the Ondo State Criminal Code Law, 2006.
Ude informed the court that Adesomoju and Okunugba were found with firearms without a lawful excuse and had allegedly burgled the residence of one Ayanfe Emehin, making away with a travel bag, flashlight, voter’s card, and clothing items valued at N50,000.
They were also accused of breaking into a shop owned by one Matta Akinyode, where they reportedly stole books and school bags worth N30,000, including cash amounting to N63,000.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to all charges against them.
Magistrate Sekoni granted each of them bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in the same amount.
The court specified that the sureties must reside within its jurisdiction, deposit N200,000, provide an affidavit of means, and submit two passport photographs.
However, the defendants were remanded in Amotekun custody, because they could not meet the bail requirements.
The case was subsequently adjourned until December 3, 2024, for further hearing.
