Two remanded over armed robbery, illegal gun possession

An Akure  Magistrates’ Court has remanded two men in Olokuta  Correctional Centre for alleged armed robbery and unlawful possession of gun.

The suspects, Akeem Adams, 32, and Okon George, 35, were accused  of conspiring to rob one Isa Yakubu at gunpoint.

The accused are facing a three-count charge of armed robbery, conspiracy and illegal possession of firearms.

According to the prosecutor, Abdulateef Suliaman, the accused persons and others at large committed the offences on August 4, 2022, at about 2:00pm along Owo/Benin expressway, inward Molenge, Ipele, Owo.

Suliaman told the court that the accused, while on a bike and armed with a cut to size locally made gun, robbed Yakubu of the sum of N2,250,000.

The offences contravene Sections 6(a&b), 1(2)(b) and 3 of the Armed Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, Cap. R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The prosecutor urged  the court to remand the defendant at the Correctional Centre pending the issuance of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the counts as their counsel, O. Oladapo prayed for an adjournment to enable him file a counter affidavit to the application sought.

The Magistrate, Tope Aladejana, ordered that the accused persons be remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre, Akure.

The case was adjourned till September 15 for ruling on the remand application.
