UK-Based Nigerian cancels wedding over N3.5m bride price list
A UK-based Nigerian man has called off his wedding after receiving a traditional bride price list from his fiancée’s family, valued at approximately N3.5 million.
The list, which included drinks, livestock, clothing, and cash gifts, proved too burdensome, leading to the breakdown of the engagement.
The story, shared by social media user Princess Adeola on her X account, sparked debates about cultural practices that place heavy financial burdens on potential suitors.
According to Adeola, the man had been deeply committed to his fiancée, even planning to bring her abroad and fund her education, but was heartbroken when she supported her family’s demands, citing Nigeria’s economic situation.
The man, who had been navigating a long-distance relationship, had initially sought advice from Adeola about the marriage.
However, he expressed frustration upon receiving the demands, describing them as akin to “selling a child” and questioning the sustainability of a union that begins under such financial strain.
Adeola shared, “This guy was deeply in love and had genuine plans for the woman. But yesterday, he told me he was heartbroken after receiving the bride price list from her family.
“He couldn’t believe the woman he loves sided with such demands, justifying it with rising costs in Nigeria.”
In his disappointment, the man decided to call off the engagement, stating that his intentions to invest in her future should have been valued over monetary expectations.
He remarked that such practices could encourage men to see marriage as a transaction.
The distraught man reportedly plans to cut ties with the woman and move on.
Adeola lamented the situation, blaming the family’s excessive demands and the fiancée’s failure to advocate for understanding, saying it cost them the opportunity to build a meaningful future together.
