The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, will hold its 7th Inaugural Lecture on Tuesday, 21st January 2025.
The Hope reports that the lecture will take place at the TETFund Building, Laje Campus, Ondo, at 11 a.m., focusing on the topic ‘Man and His Oral Health: Exploits of a Maxillofacial Surgeon’.
According to the Inaugural Lecturer, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Sciences, and Chairman of the Committee of Deans, UNIMED, Ondo, Professor Ezekiel Adebayo, “The health of man is inextricably linked to oral health.
However, most people do not pay adequate attention to their oral health except when they experience severe toothaches, uncontrolled facial swellings, or sustain facial injuries.”
He added that the current healthcare system is fragmented, with oral health services poorly integrated into primary healthcare.
The Inaugural Lecturer, who has made significant contributions to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions such as maxillofacial trauma, motorcycle-related injuries, oral cancer, and the impact of oral health on pregnancy outcomes, will highlight the challenges of treating these patients.
Professor Adebayo, FICS, FWACS, BDS, MPH, a Maxillofacial Surgeon, will also recommend measures to improve public health through enhanced health education, better integration of essential oral healthcare into the primary healthcare system, and improved training of healthcare providers to deliver advanced care that enhances the quality of life for affected individuals.
“Maxillofacial surgery is a specialised procedure performed by a highly trained dental surgeon. These operations can treat diseases or repair injuries of the face, jaw, neck, or mouth,” he explained.
