A middle-aged man, Babatope Williams, has been arraigned before an Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court, for driving recklessly and allegedly killing a motorcyclist.
The police charged Williams, whose residence was not given, with reckless driving, manslaughter and driving without driver’s licence.
According to the prosecution, the defendant committed the offences on April 5, 2023 about 10pm at opposite FERMA along Owo-Ilesa expressway, Akure.
The prosecutor, Inspector Mary Adebayo informed the court that the defendant drove a Toyota Camry Saloon car with number plate Ondo AK 59 HY in a careless and inconsiderate manner and hit one motorcyclist.
Adebayo said the defendant, being the driver in charge of the vehicle hit the driver of one unregistered TVS motorcycle whose identity was yet unknown and caused his death.
The victim, she said, died at the spot of the accident.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant also drove the car with an expired driver’s licence
The offences, she said, contravened Sections 18, 81, 80 and 50 of the Traffic Laws Cap 136 Volume 3 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the four counts levelled against him.
The prosecutor who applied for a date to study the case file, informed the court that he would be calling three witnesses to testify in the case.
Chief Magistrate Folashade Aduroja admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till May 24,for a hearing.
