Val’s day: Huge patronage as lovers besiege gift shops, others

As lovers celebrate Valentine’s day today, shopping malls, gift shops and relaxation centres are recording huge patronage as people besieged them to get gifts for their loved ones.

When our reporters visited some of the shopping malls and shops yesterday, staff of the centres were seen busy attending to their customers.

A survey by our reporters showed that underwears, rings and teddies topped list of items fun seekers purchased.

Other items in hot purchase include cakes, make-up kits, flowers and valentine cards.

It was also observed that hotels, entertainment joints were brimming with lovers, particularly in the night where several shows had been lined up.

The CEO of an Akure shopping mall, Ayodeji Moses disclosed that people have been coming to get gifts for Valentine for their loved ones and that the sales have increased. His words “A lot of people have been coming around to get things, you know this is a gift store and we give out the best, people have been coming to get gift items like: teddies, make up kits, cards, flowers, Valentine cards.

At the popular shopping mall, it was gathered that fun-seekers had commenced shopping for Valentine’s Day celebration since the beginning of the month. An attendant disclosed that purchase of teddy bears, wines, perfumes, gowns, shoes and jewelries have soared.

Aside the big supermarkets in town, other small and medium scale entrepreneurs that sell gifts, accessories and cloths also felt the impact of the “love season” on their businesses.

A gift seller, Miss Adesolami Adeniyi described the rate at which customers besieged her shop to shop for Val gifts as huge.

In her words, “People have been coming to buy some things since morning and the way people order gifts is really surprising “.

 A picture frame seller,  Mr Adedayo Samuel toldThe Hope, “I am really impressed with this year valentine celebration because people are really turning up to buy gifts for their loved ones and some still keep on to order for goods. I can say this year valentine is really amazing.

A cloth seller, Mrs Adedara Moyinoluwa expressed happiness at the rate at which customers had been patronizing her shop.

She said, “I can say am very happy about this year valentine because for instance today now, I had a sales of over N30,000  because people really want to celebrate their loved ones and despite the fact that there is no money people still strive to buy gifts for their lovers and it really fetched money for we the gift sellers.

Omidan Adesola Tomilabi, who sells varieties of drinks, told The Hope that there was discount on each alcoholic drink during this valentine period and customers had been coming to buy.

Some shoppers also spoke with The Hope on what they are getting for the celebration.

Mr Tajudeen Olawale said that he had a plan to get something special for his mother. His friend, Olorunwa Ogundare, who also visited the mall to shop for Valentine’s Day said he believed this year’s Val would be a special one, adding that he was trying to get some nice gifts for his mother who has always been there for him.

Miss Mary a customer  said she is not in a relationship, but if she is in a relationship she would rather make a portrait of his picture for him than buying perfumes or shoe for him.
