The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye has said the state government is proud of Sunshine Stars FC players and officials’ performance in the President Federation Cup.

Yusuf-Ogunleye in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Akure said the team had done well, having played three matches within a week and only lost on penalties to Kano Pillars in the semi-final having played a 1-1 draw in the regulation time.

According to the commissioner, the team will now return and focus their efforts on the league and ensure survival.

“I’m proud of you. I want to congratulate the entire crew members and players of Sunshine Stars for giving their best despite losing to Kano Pillars in a penalty shoot.

“The team defeated Rivers United on Wednesday, moved to Gombe on Thursday morning, defeated  Gombe United on Sunday and returned to Abuja to engage Kano Pillars on Wednesday.

“I commend the team for having the strength to play a 1-1 draw at the end of the 90 minutes despite the stress of traveling by road, playing three matches within a week.

“Gallant boys, I commend you despite the loss. Now that we are unable to proceed to the semi-final, it is now time to return home to concentrate on the league match,” he said

Yusuf-Ogunleye later solicited the understanding and support of the good people of Ondo State to keep faith with the team and pray along as Sunshine Stars engages fellow strugglers, Akwa United on Sunday to move up on the log.
