‘We ‘ll  empower students  through craft’

The Home Economics Teachers Association of Nigeria (HETAN) has reiterated its commitment to empower students and members of the society through crafts in all aspects of home economics.

The National President of HETAN, Mrs Toyin Ogungbe stated this at the annual World Home Economics Day celebration held at Fiwasaye Girls Grammar School, Akure.

The President who said the association was  planning to start skills acquisition programme, with the help of the government commended the Ondo state government for its support during the hosting of HETAN 2018 National Conference in the state.

While saying that the essence of the annual event was to showcase the importance of Home Economics education in the home and the society. She noted that HETAN’s roles as home makers, caregivers and moulders of future leaders cannot be over-emphasised.

Mrs Ogungbe urged members of the association to continue to live up to their responsibilities by discharging their duties efficiently.

Earlier in her address, the state President of the association, Mrs Temitope Olabode posited that Home Economics’ central focus is hinged on the improvement of lives of everyone in the society, adding that it is a field of study with various marketable skills.

She informed that the theme of this year’s celebration which was “Creativity and Innovation in Home Economics for Sustainable Development” was timely in the face of challenging situation of the economy, where unemployment is the order of the day.

In his keynote address, ,the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Femi Agagu affirmed that Home Economics which involves entrepreneurship is one of the major solutions to engage youths to be self sufficient.

The commissioner who was represented by his Special Assistant on Administration harped on the need for youths to develop new ideas and innovation for sustainable development especially at the crucial time of insecurity and high rate of unemployment.

The Permanent Secretary, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs Olufunmilayo Ajayi while congratulating members of HETAN for their contributions to education development admonished them to encourage students to be creative and innovative by engaging them in vocations and practicals in schools.

Highlight of the event include lecturers organised to showcase the skills and talents of students from selected schools across the state.
