Ondo state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has warned residents of the state to either wear nose mask or be isolated for 14 days in the state isolation centres.
Akeredolu who gave this warning yesterday in Akure, the state capital, while flagging off mass distribution of free nose masks to the people of the state, added that whoever flouts the directive would be arrested and would be responsible for his or her upkeep at the isolation centre.
Governor Akeredolu who emphasised compulsory wearing of nose masks in public places by all residents across the 18 local government areas of the state, also added that enforcement of the measure had already commenced in the state.
He stressed that whoever is arrested for flouting the order would have his or her specimen taken to be tested for Coronavirus.
The governor said the flag off of massive distribution of nose masks to the citizens was one of the numerous efforts by his government to curtail the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
He revealed that over 400 tailors drawn from the 18 local government areas of the state were engaged for the production of the nose masks, a development which he said has further improved their livelihood and contributed to the economy of the state.
He noted that the tailors were happy because of the opportunity given to them by government to exhibit their talents, learn new skills and for being able to generate incomes to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their livelihood.
Akeredolu expressed satisfaction that the production of the masks was done according to the specifications of International Health Organisation standard, while the materials deployed for the production also met the prescribed medical standard.
According to him, despite the fact that the Coronavirus pandemic is ravaging the whole world, his administration is adopting exceptional measures to contain the scourge.
He revealed that the initiative of massive production and distribution of the masks was born out of his desire to always put people first in his dealings and feelings.
“As a responsive government to the yearnings of its people, our administration has put in place some measures to cushion the effects of the hardship occasioned by the preventive lockdown emplaced to stem the spread of the virus.
“ The realisation of the negative impacts on the economic activities of our state and its resultant consequences on the livelihood of the citizens compelled this initiative.
“Apart from the ongoing distribution of palliatives across the state, we place high premium on the preventive measures to contain the spread of the deadly virus, hence the need to make nose masks free for the citizens”, the governor stressed.
Earlier, Chairman of committee on mass production of nose masks and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of New Media, Mr Gani Mohammed, lauded the governor for the initiative, which he said would further prevent the spread of the COVID-19 in the state.
He said the tailors were happy for the opportunity to do something for the government, and to also earn something during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Two representatives of the tailors, Sola Oyesola and Oluwatosin Fafesobi, who appreciated the Governor for providing a means of employment for them, equally described the exercise as an empowerment as a real empowerment for the tailors in the state.
Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor of University of Medical Sciences UNIMED, Ondo, Professor Adesegun Fatusi, while applauding Governor Akeredolu for the initiative, emphasised that the ultimate instrument for public health is the face mask because COVID-19 is a disease that spreads through droplet.
