Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has said his government will continue to prioritise sports and the welfare of athletes.
Aiyedatiwa stated this at the “2024 Olympic Day Run” held at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure.
The Olympic Day Run in Ondo State, led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Olympians, and sports men and women, started from the Government House grounds to the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure to mark the 2024 Olympic Day celebration.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, said his administration has always maintained that sports are a good avenue for social interaction and integration among youths in the state and country at large.
He said, “Sports are very dear to our hearts in Ondo State, and our administration will not relent in its efforts to engage the people in sporting activities for health benefits and as a chosen career to gainfully employ the youth.”
He said the state would continue to espouse the objective of the Olympic celebration, which, among others, is to promote national unity and grassroots sports development in the country.
“The contract for the upgrading of Akure Township Stadium has been awarded by the state government to a reputable contractor to make the facilities meet international standards for the use of the sports-loving people of Ondo State. Other stadia in Ondo, Ikare, and Ile Oluji will also be awarded soon to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.”
“Efforts are ongoing to award the contract for the new stadium at Araromi Street in Akure to decentralise the over-stretching of facilities at the Akure Township Stadium and to enhance sports development in the state. Our administration will continue to give necessary priority to sports.”
In his welcome address, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, said the sustainability of the event was a clear indication that sports are a veritable instrument for the promotion of global peace.
“The extension of the event to the state is a clear indication that sports promote global peace. It’s the commitment of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to prioritise sports and engage the youths meaningfully through sporting activities. Sports facilities are upgraded all over the state. Ondo State athletes are able to compete with their counterparts outside the state and win laurels, thereby representing Nigeria in international competitions.”
The representative of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Mr. Sylvester Ikuejamoye, noted that sport keeps the mind and body strong and healthy.
The high point of the event was a short display by the three Guinness World Record holders in rope skipping and the presentation of certificates to the Governor and others.
