We’ll give Judiciary legislative backing – ODHA

Ondo State House of Assembly says the optimal functionality of the Judiciary is of utmost importance for effective administration of justice in the State.

It therefore promised to give a legislative backing to the arm in order to ensure the advancement of Justice.

The House Committee on Judiciary and Public Petitions led by its Chairman, Stephen Abitogun gave the assurance during a familiarisation visit to the State High Court in Akure.

While saying that the implementation of judicial and legislative autonomy is crucial to fast-track effective service delivery, the committee members called for the political will of the State Governors in Nigeria in this regard.

The Lawmakers called for a symbiotic relationship between the tiers of government to enact and review laws for more development.

The Committee said the visit was long overdue after the inauguration of the standing Committees of the 10th Assembly, adding that justice delivery is crucial to good governance, hence the need for all hands to be on deck.

According to the Committee, the observation raised by the Chief Judge and other senior Judges during the visit, especially in financing the judiciary is well noted, calling on them to always ensure regular feedback for prompt attention.

Earlier, the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Olusegun Odusola while welcoming the committee stressed the need for the three arms of government to work independently and co-exist towards good governance.

Justice Odusola who ephasised the need for the implementation of the judicial autonomy to strengthen the system, promised to cooperate with other arms to move the State forward.

While highlighting the challenges of the judiciary to include poor funding, infrastructural decay among others, he sought for the intervention of Lawmakers in accessing adequate funds and getting an increase budgetary provision for a viable system.

Other Judges while speaking believed that the visit and robust discussions will go a long way in improving the system.
