The Conference of Speakers of the South West State Legislatures has lent its full weight to the existence and survival of the newly inaugurated security network tagged ‘Operation Amotekun’.

Operation Amotekun’ was recently launched by Governors of the South West States of Nigeria as a security outfit meant to ensure maximum protection for residents in view of the dwindling security situation across the country.

The inauguration of the ‘Amotekun’ security network by the South West State Governors generated several hues and cries from different segments of the society.

In a bid to legitimize the security outfit and give full backing to maximum protection of lives and property in the South West States of Nigeria, Speakers of the State House of Assemblies  across the region met at a conference in Ibadan.

The Conference among other things bordering on the lives of the citizenry discussed the inauguration of the ‘Amotekun’ security network in the South West.

In a communique after the meeting, the South West Speaker wholeheartedly lent their support to the inauguration and operational existence of the ‘Amotekun’ security network knowing full well that it would go a long way in checkmating security threats in the South West States.

The Lawmakers noted that the newly inaugurated security network would only complement all the security outfits in the South West and not replace them.

While emphasising that the ‘Operation Amotekun’ in the South West is in tandem with the spirit of the constitution which makes the protection of lives and property a priority of government, the Conference of Speakers maintained that the ‘Amotekun’ security outfit is a welcome development especially in the spirit of existing policing laws in the South West States.

The Lawmakers observed that the ‘Operation Amotekun’ is similar to already existing security outfits such as Hisbah and Joint Task Force in the northern part of the country which had been in operation years back .

The one day meeting of Speakers of the Legislatures in the South West came alive in Ibadan with a view to making the position of the legislative arm of government in the region known to the public.

The meeting which was presided over by the Chairman of South West Conference of Speakers and Speaker Ondo State House of Assembly, Oleyelogun Bamidele , had in attendance other Speakers of Legislatures in the South Western part of Nigeria.
