We’ve mere platforms in Nigeria, not political parties- Varsity Don

A Mass Communication scholar and author, Dr. Gbenga Abimbola, has asserted that there was no any political party in the country yet.

He said what is obtainable in Nigeria now can be best described as mere platforms for grabbing political power.

Abimbola, the Acting Head of Department of Mass Communication, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, in a write-up posted on social media, argued that Nigeria has more of political jobbers and contractors than real politicians.

He lampooned politicians in the country for jumping from one political party to another because of what he called personal and self-serving interest, describing them as selfish.

According to the University don, everything in Nigeria is the direct opposite of the good and the ideal.

“Do we have political parties In Nigeria? The answer is capital NO.

Do we have politicians in Nigeria? The answer is lower case yes.

Do we have political jobbers and contractors in Nigeria? The answer is capital YES.

“Ladies and gentlemen, our country is a theatre of comedy and the absurd. Everything seem to be the opposite of anything called the good and the ideal. Nigeria, indeed Africa, appeared to have been jinxed. From politics to education, commerce, security and even religion, we are the direct opposite of the usual.

“I make bold to say that we don’t have political parties in Nigeria. What we have can at best be described as mere platforms for grabbing political power. Party system is based on ideology and this controls the belief system, programmes and world view of service to humanity using political power. But that is far from the case in our country. Ideology is not flexible. It is somehow rigid which makes it difficult for real political parties and their adherents to merge, switch or fluid.

“No politician in sane climes finds it easy to change party come what may. Even if aggrieved, he at best quits partisan politics instead of moving to another party whose ideology is not in tandem with his. In Nigeria, politicians change parties like under wears. Even elected officials dump their parties and still retain their seats shamelessly and heavens do not fall.

“Tell me of any political office holder in Nigeria today from council to federal levels who had not changed party either through merger, collaboration, metamorphosis, forming a brand new one or outright switching from his party to another. They do this because of their permanent interest that is personal and self serving, thus no permanent friend or foe in politics.

“I wonder when members of the APC blame our woes on PDP’s 16 years misrule. They say it shamelessly to absolve them of their ineptitude. But come to think if it, who among them is an original member of the APC? Who among them was not a member of any of the current opposition parties including the PDP?

” As a matter of fact, many of them were in the PDP government either as elected governors, legislators or appointed officials of the so called PDP misrule. So who’s fooling who? Many of them left the party either because they lost the party ticket, won its ticket but lost election or failed to secure appointments. Some are permanently AGIP-Any Government In Power to the extent that they are always in government because government to them is not service but “chop I chop”.

“Nigerian politicians are the most selfish set of humans and they are wickedly so. How do you explain the bogus size of government at all levels and the lean size of or nonexistent governance! They seek our votes not to serve us but to milk us. That is why they see election as a do or die affair and will go to any length at winning either by fair or foul. They buy votes and manipulate figures and it is seen as norma! as long as the end justifies the means.

“As it stands now, the two major parties and their candidates are necessary evils and the minor parties are no less evil. So what do we choose? One of the evils of course except we don’t want to choose at all.

“Let the politicians shut their mouths and stop deceiving us that they want to govern us. They are not interested in service but in looting. Their game will soon be up because more Nigerians are becoming aware of their antics”, Dr. Abimbola stressed.
