A sociologist, Dr. Mrs. Kemi Adebola has attributed the growing rate of suicide among students to several factors.
Adebola identified depression, peer influence and get-rich-quick syndrome as factors that, most times, lead to suicide among undergraduate students.
According to the seasoned sociologist, depression in this case arises from prolonged stay in school as a result of frequent strikes and examination failure.
Her words: “There was a 300 level Biochemistry student from a federal university in a neighbouring state, who reportedly committed suicide after failing his exams.
“In the suicide note he left, he claimed that his parents were telling him that they had spent too much on him. Now he had many carry-overs and did not know what to do again.”
She recommended that students be given reorientation and taught to imbibe patience.
She also admonished the government to do the needful by helping to prevent frequent strikes that can prolong the academic pursuit of students.
