The high cost of tomatoes has been attributed to the onset of rainy season and not the Muslim Ramadan period as speculated.
The Market Women leader of Iloro Tomatoes Market, Mrs. Bukola Bamidele made this known while speaking in an interview with The Hope on the high cost of the commodity yesterday in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
Bamidele said the price of a small basket of tomatoes now goes for N8,000 while the big basket is sold between N14,000 and N15,000.
According to her, the high cost is due to the onset of rainy season in the northern part of the country where the commodity is majorly cultivated, noting that the northern part experiences early rain than any other part of Nigeria.
This, she noted affects tomatoes drastically, which she said records very low supply thereby increasing the price of the little harvested.
” The northern farmers use irrigation to farm, hence they farm very close to where they can find water and some even construct a kind of drainage round their farms which overflows and sweeps away the proceeds during rainy season”, she said.
Bamidele disclosed that the tomatoes grown in the South West will soon start entering the market as from next month to complement whatever is got from the north.
She declared that three different types of Tomatoes; ‘Kerewa, Alausa and including Beskey’ grown within the South West states will bring down the price of tomatoes as soon as they flood the market in June and July.
Also, the Chairman of Tomatoes Traders at Shasha Tomatoes Market along Òwò road , Alhaji Zubairu Muhammed said people should have been conversant with the seasonal nature of tomatoes, which he said is always scarce during rainy season.
He said rain, is not friendly to tomatoes in the northern part of the country.
He noted that the product would soon be come cheaper as soon as rain subsides in the areas where they are brought from.
He urged people to be patient as the tomatoes grown within the South West will soon flood the market to serve as alternative.
