Woman remanded for pretense

A palm-oil manufacturer, Sayo Olafare has been  remanded in prison custody by an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court on the allegation  of false pretense.

The accused person was alleged to have committed  the offence on March 14, 2018 around 6:30 p.m. at Igboya Street, Ile-Ife.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Bassey Asukwo, told the court that the accused person collected N90,000 from one Mary Adegbaju with a promise to supply her 15 kegs of 25 litres  of  palm oil on March 31, 2018, but failed to  honuor her pledge.

Asukwo said the accused person fraudulently collected and converted the sum of N90,000 to her own use.

He stated that the offence contravened the provisions of  sections 383, 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

The accused person, who was not legally represented, pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Muhibah Olatunji, granted the accused person bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum, after she was arraigned on two count of fraud and collection of N90,000 under pretence.

Olatunji ordered that the surety must swear to affidavit of means, be a close relation, produce three years tax clearance certificate, as well as present three recent passport photographs.

The case was adjourned till March 21, 2019 for definite hearing.
