Woman jailed over absence in court

A Magistrate court sitting in Odigbo, Ondo State has sentenced a woman, Fatima Olagunju to three weeks imprisonment for failure to attend court proceedings.
The accused fail to appear in court four times for a case as a defendant.
The accused was brought before the presiding Magistrate, Mr. T.J Ajayi, on one count.
The charge sheet read in part, “That you, Fatima Olagunju on August 6, 2019, August 21, 2019, September 17, 2019 and September 24, 2019 at about 9.00am at Chief Magistrate court 11, Ore being a defendant in a case with Charge No. MOR/120C/2019 did fail to attend the said court in the judicial proceedings instituted against you and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 133(2) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006”.
The accused however pleaded guilty to the count.
The presiding magistrate, T.J Ajayi, however sentenced the accused to three weeks imprisonment.
He said, “The accused shall continue her trial in MOR/120C/2019 when returned from prison”.
