Woman stabs neighbour with broken bottle, docked

The Ondo State Command Police on Thursday arraigned a 27-year-old woman, Ajoke Akinola , before an Akure Chief Magistrates.’ Court for allegedly stabbing her neighbour, Tayo Taiwo, with a broken bottle in the head.

The defendant, who resides at No 8, Araromi Street, Akure, is standing trial for assault and causing grievous harm to her neighbour.

 The prosecutor, Inspector Nelson Akintimehin , told the court that the defendant committed the offence on December 13 at her residence.

He said the victim’s husband, one Mr. Taiwo, who is a neighbour to the defendant, reported the matter at the ‘A’ Division Police Station in Akure.

The prosecutor alleged that a fight had ensued between the defendant and the victim’s children. Thereafter, the complainant accused the defendant of taking sides by making peace accordingly between the children which led to an heated argument between both mothers.

He told the court that the defendant allegedly beat the complainant to a pulp with a fist blow and thereafter stabbed her with a broken bottle in the left side of her head.

The prosecutor told the court that the complainant, who sustained serious injuries, was rushed to a hospital.

The charge reads in part, “That you, Akinola Ajoke, on December 13, 2022 at about 8:30 at No 8 Araromi Street, Akure in the Akure Magisterial district did assault on Tayo Taiwo ‘f’ by beating her with your fist blow and thereafter stabbed her with a broken bottle on left side of her head”

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence which contravenes Sections 252 and 355 of the Criminal Code, Law of Ondo State, 2006.

The complaint sought for settlement out of court. But the prosecution declined due to the state of the victim’s health and the allegation by the complainants family that the DPO of the station was trying to cover up the defendant.

The Chief Magistrate, Musa Al-Yunnus granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum

Al-Yunnus ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case till December 29, 2022 for hearing.
