Women engineers challenged to inspire, lead

By Sade Adewale

Women engineers have been urged to play a more active role in national development by mentoring and inspiring the next generation, as their contributions remain pivotal to societal progress.

This charge was given by Engr. Dr. Funmilayo Waheed-Adekojo at the inauguration ceremony of the 7th Chairman of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), held at Winner Guest House, Akure.

Speaking on the theme “The Role of Women in Engineering and Nation-Building,” Waheed-Adekojo stressed that increasing the visibility and representation of women in engineering would serve as a strong motivation for young girls aspiring to venture into the profession.

“The contributions of women in engineering are not just significant; they are essential for creating a sustainable and prosperous Nigeria,” she said.

She pointed out that women engineers are at the forefront of addressing critical societal challenges such as access to clean water and renewable energy solutions.

According to her, women bring unique perspectives that drive innovation and inclusive problem-solving. “Diversity in engineering enhances productivity, stimulates economic growth, and fosters creative solutions tailored to the needs of different communities,” she added.

Also speaking at the event, the National President of APWEN, Engr. Dr. Adebisi Osim, who was represented by the Southwest Coordinator, Prof. Tawakalitu Onifade, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to breaking barriers for women in the engineering field. She urged the newly inaugurated executives to be “torchbearers of inclusivity, innovation, and excellence.”

In her remarks, the newly inaugurated Chairman of APWEN Akure, Engr. Adenike Obakoyowa, pledged to drive gender inclusion in the engineering profession.

“We will work tirelessly to increase awareness that engineering is a career for girls too. Our goal is to improve the numerical strength of female engineers and support their professional growth,” she assured.

She outlined plans for professional development workshops, industrial visits, and career counseling sessions to encourage young girls to take up careers in science and engineering.

Obakoyowa further emphasised the importance of collaboration with the state government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to promote women in engineering and support the education of the girl child.

On her part, the outgoing chairman, Engr. Adebimpe Amigun, commended the achievements recorded during her tenure and encouraged members to remain committed to mentorship, professional growth, and community outreach.

As APWEN ushers in new leadership, the event served as a clarion call for women engineers to continue pushing boundaries, creating opportunities, and upholding excellence in engineering and national development.
