Women no longer need husband’s approval letter for visa clearance — NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has officially scrapped the requirement for married women to present a husband’s approval letter for visa clearance when travelling abroad.

In a statement issued on Thursday by Femi Babafemi, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, it was revealed that this change followed a thorough review of the existing visa clearance process. The NDLEA acknowledged that the requirement, originally introduced in response to incidents in certain countries, is no longer necessary and has been removed.

The agency clarified that the inclusion of such a stipulation was initially implemented to address concerns raised by specific international developments. However, a reassessment of the procedure determined that this particular requirement was outdated.

“The procedure for visa clearance, as required by some countries, is currently under review. The provision mandating a letter of approval from a married woman’s husband has been dropped from the list,” the statement read.

The NDLEA assured the public that an updated list of visa clearance documentation will be made available soon, once the ongoing review is completed.

This move marks a significant step towards eliminating outdated travel restrictions on married women and signals a shift towards a more equitable travel clearance system.
