World men’s day: celebrating responsible fathers

By Adedotun Ajayi

In the heart of bustling cities and serene villages alike, there exist unsung heroes whose tales whisper resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment. These are the narratives of the fathers who, against tempests and trials, stood tall as beacons of strength, embodying the essence of responsible fatherhood.

Meet Aderoju, a construction worker from Irese, who after toiling under the sun, returns home to don the hat of an unwavering mentor. His eyes, etched with exhaustion, light up as he engages in helping his children with their studies, imparting wisdom that surpasses textbooks.

In the Ondo State metropolis Akure, lies the story of Ezekiel, a single father working multiple jobs to provide for his children. His days blur into nights, yet his presence remains a steadfast anchor, weaving tales of resilience and hope for his youngsters.

In the heart of Ondo, amidst the urban sprawl, Adekunle nurtures his children with tenderness and dedication. Despite societal pressures, he shatters stereotypes, embracing the roles of both provider and nurturer, showcasing the myriad facets of responsible fatherhood.

These men, and countless others, defy the stereotype of absentee fathers. Theirs are the stories often unheard, of bedtime stories and scraped knees mended, of dreams shared and obstacles conquered together.

Their sacrifices transcend boundaries, their love unbounded by circumstances. These are the fathers who stayed, the guardians who weathered storms, and the role models worth celebrating on World Men’s Day, a tribute to their unwavering commitment, resilience, and the enduring legacy they craft within their families and society at large.

They are worth celebrating not merely for their titles or roles but for the invaluable essence they infuse into our existence. Their presence is the steady rhythm in the symphony of life, guiding, protecting, and nurturing with a love that transcends time and trials.

Fathers teach us resilience, fortitude, and the power of quiet dedication. Their unwavering support forms the bedrock upon which dreams are built, and their guidance echoes through the corridors of our memories, shaping us into the individuals we become. As we celebrate fathers, let us honor their steadfastness, sacrifices, and immeasurable contributions that sculpt futures and etch indelible imprints upon our hearts.

According to Chinedu Adams, a business man in Arakale Akure, said celebrating responsible fathers should involve recognizing their pivotal role in balancing family and career demands.

“Responsible fathers are the cornerstone of our society,” stated the entrepreneur. “Their commitment to both their families and their professional endeavors deserves acknowledgment and support. Perhaps providing flexible work policies, family-oriented benefits, or mentorship programs tailored for fathers would be a meaningful way to honor their dedication and encourage a harmonious work-life balance.”

Damilola Olatunji, an accountant, said growing up under the nurturing love of a devoted father shaped my world in ways I’ll forever cherish.

According to her; “My father wasn’t just a provider; he was my rock, my confidant, and my guiding light. His unwavering support, gentle guidance, and unconditional love served as the cornerstone upon which I built my dreams. His belief in me, his encouragement to pursue my passions, and his presence in every milestone empowered me to embrace challenges fearlessly. Witnessing the celebration of responsible fathers fills me with immense gratitude. It’s a tribute not only to my own father but to all fathers who nurture, protect, and empower their daughters. Their love lays the foundation for a girl to flourish into a strong, confident, and empowered woman.” She concluded

“For those of us who’ve experienced the absence of a father figure since birth, celebrating responsible fathers can evoke a mix of emotions,” expressed by Omotoyosi Ajewole, an entrepreneur who was abandoned by her father.

According to her; “While it’s difficult to relate to the celebration, there’s a profound appreciation for those fathers who remain steadfast in their roles. Their commitment stands as evidence to the impact a father’s presence can have on shaping a child’s life. However, for individuals like myself, this day often serves as a reminder of what could have been. Yet, it also fosters a sense of admiration for those fathers who choose to be actively engaged in their children’s lives, recognizing the importance of their presence and influence.” She said

In the same vein, Wasiu Adeoti, a businessman, who struggled due to the lack of a paternal influence in his life. said

“For somebody like myself, who traversed tumultuous paths due to the absence of a father figure during my formative years, celebrating responsible fathers carries a bittersweet weight,”

According to him; “The absence of guidance and support often set the stage for challenges that persisted into adulthood. Witnessing the celebration of responsible fathers can serve as a poignant reminder of what was missing, a compass, a mentor, a source of stability. Yet, it also ignites a fervent desire to celebrate those fathers who defy the odds, who provide unwavering support, and who actively engage in their children’s lives. Their presence symbolizes hope, a beacon for a different narrative, one that showcases the transformative power of a father’s involvement.”

In the words of a man who spent their childhood in an orphanage but preferred anonymity, said growing up in an orphanage meant navigating life’s twists and turns without the direct guidance of a father figure, although I was shown love and care but I’m sure it can never be the same.

According to him; The celebration of responsible fathers stirs a mix of emotions within me. It reminds me of the family connection I never had, the paternal presence I longed for but never experienced. Yet, it’s also a poignant acknowledgment of the profound impact a father’s love and guidance can have on a child’s life. Responsible fathers represent a beacon of support, offering the kind of direction, care, and protection that many of us orphaned children yearned for”
