Ondo State Government has harped on the need for people to adhere strictly to public sanitation and hygiene by judiciously using the toilet in putting an end to open defecation across the State.
The State Government through the State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), stated this while celebrating the 2022 World’s toilet day held at the African Church Grammar School Alagbaka, Akure.
The celebration with the theme. “Sanitation Innovation For Economic Development : Making the Invisible Visible”. also held the world toilet summit hosted by Nigeria in Abuja where the State representatives were led by the Commissioner for Water Resources,Public Sanitation and Hygiene,Mr Fatai Olotu which was replicated in all States of the Federation.
In his Opening remarks,the General Manager of RUWASSA,Mr Rotimi Oladimeji who was represented by the Director, Finance and Administration,Mr Victor Igumah revealed that if people must live a healthy life, open defecation must be put at bay.
According to him,every 19th of November is being used to commemorate the day across the World to raise awareness for people to have an attitudinal change to ensure sustainable development.
He said that the construction of toilets at home and in public places is very important as it plays a crucial role in the sanitation of households and tackling diseases, stressing that open defecation poses obvious environmental, health and economic hazards.
To this end,he informed that President Mohammadu Buhari in 2018 gave a matching order to tackle open defecation ,while the programme tagged “Nigeria Open Defecation Free by 2025 “was launched which Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu immediately gave directives that the State must comply and equally launched a campaign as well as inaugurating Ambassadors across the local government Areas.
While saying that the Kamomi Aketi water scheme of the present administration to ensure easy access to water in Communities is in tandem with the programme ,he urged participants to spread the message in households and Communities .
Giving highlight of the event, the Director of Sanitation,Mr Paul Ogamba noted that the theme was apt in applying innovation and methodology to sanitation for economic developments.
