‘Lack of sport development, Nigeria football problem’

As condemnation continues to trail Nigeria’s inability to qualify for Continental and World Cup, a football administrator has highlighted major areas Nigeria Football Federation NFF should work on.

Recently, Golden Eaglets were knocked out of the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-1 loss to Burkina Faso — ending their chance of qualifying for the World Cup later this year.

Last year, Super Eagles came with devastating news by losing to Ghana at the National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria. The Super Falcons and others were not left out in serving Nigerian’s breakfast.

Speaking with Sporting Hope the Director of Sports, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Mr. Lawal Akorede disclosed that Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) promoted sport but failed to develop it.

Lawal added that corruption and bad mindset also contributed to the country’s bad performance at football competitions. 

He said:”Nigeria does not do enough for their local coaches, some local coaches are good, attention must be channeled on how to train the trainers through, refresher courses,” he said.

Highlighting the possible solutions to the menace, he said NFF must go to the grassroots to scout and pick talented players for international competitions.

“Favoritism and nepotism must be eschew, scouting at grassroots, nurturing of players must be birth,” he added.

He maintained that the Nigerian government should create an enabling environment for the coaches to excel as well and ensuring there is discipline at all sphere s.

According to him, proper remuneration should be put in place for the players, coach, and other staff.
