In recent time, rape cases have been rampant in some states of the federation, with Ondo State now recording cases of the criminal act virtually on a weekly basis.
Despite several efforts being made by the security agents to tackle such ugly acts, the perpetrators still commit them .
Findings from a National Survey carried out in 2014 on Violence Against Children in Nigeria confirmed that one in four females experienced experiencing sexual violence in childhood, with approximately 70% reporting more than one incident of sexual violence.
In the same study, it was found that 24.8% of females’ aged 18 to 24 years experienced sexual abuse prior to age 18, of which 5.0% sought help, with only 3.5% receiving any services.
It was recorded that Nigeria has the highest prevalent rate of child sexual abuse, around 34.4 per cent.
A recent case involved a suspected 68-year-old serial rapist, Mr. Elkanah Alonge, who allegedly derives pleasure in molesting underaged girls hawking for their parents at Ipogun community, Ifedore Local Government area of Ondo State.
The long hands of nemesis recently caught up with Alonge, a self-acclaimed Pastor-in-charge of a church in the community, as he was apprehended by the police for allegedly molesting an 11- year-old girl in Ipogun, near Akure the state capital .
The Hope reliably gathered that the suspect allegedly lured the victim and other young girls who hawked vegetables and eggs into his bedroom, where he defiled them.
The alleged rapist sexagenarian who appears as a responsible man, is said to be married with five grown-up children.
Unfortunately, Alonge had been alleged to have been engrossed in the menace simply because mothers of the victims remained silent over the issue and failed to report and pursue the case, out of fear of what others might think about them.
These mothers believe rape is a stigma on their daughters.
To forestall further molestation by the man, it was gathered that many mothers in the community have been skeptical about sending their daughters to hawk around the residence of the so-called pastor, whose members were said to be ignorant of his alleged devilish and ungodly act.
The 11-year-old victim, whose name was given as Jumoke Owoyemi, was said to have confessed to her mother that the man had sex with her three times when she sold vegetables to him .
Owoyemi’s boldness to speak out in the community has now encouraged other mothers to narrate the unwholesome experiences of their daughters. And it was discovered that no fewer than eight underaged girls were also raped by the suspected e serial rapist.
The suspect who was interrogated by the confessed that whenever the underaged girls hawked to his residence, he usually lured them into his house by giving them extra money, buy all they brought for sale and thereafter force himself on them.
Meanwhile, youths of the community, who said they had handed the suspect over to the police, said, ” we have done what is expected . We do not want such nefarious activity from him, and to prevent any repetition of similar issue from any nature, he should be handled by the law.
“We want the full weight of the law to be applied in this particular case, so as to serve as deterrent to others who seek to undesirably take advantage of little girls who are unprotected”.
The youths said that the suspect was arrested and taken to Ipogun Police Station and was asked to pay certain amount for bail, from there the case was transfered to the Divisional Headquarters, Ilara-Mokin.
“The police compromised over the issue by releasing the suspect but we, the youth of Ipogun are calling for justice to be done to prevent future reoccurrence; said one of the youths.
Also speaking with The Hope, one of the elders in the community, alleged that “Alonge was arrested for rape by the youths in our community and taken to the police station on Sunday.
“On getting to the station on Monday, we were told the alleged serial rapist we arrested and handed over to the police had been released.
“When we enquired about the condition on which he was released, they said they ran a test on the little girl and still found out that she was still a virgin.
“We heard the suspect is no more in our community and is no where to be found”.
Like wise, the mother of the girl has ran to Akure and refused to respond to our questions on the hospital her daughter was examined, so that we could set our eyes on the result claimed by the police.
