Former lawmaker representing Akoko South East/South West Federal Constituency, Babatunde Kolawole, has emphasised the pivotal role of the family in tackling crime, urging parents to instil discipline and sound moral values in their children.
Speaking at the Youth Multi-Stakeholders Summit on Social Vices, organised by the Coalition of Nigerian Youths on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA) in Akure, Ondo State capital, Kolawole, who chaired the occasion, underscored the need for collective action in addressing security challenges.
He noted that crime among youths is largely driven by poverty, peer pressure, and lack of proper guidance, stressing the need for value reorientation and mentorship to steer young people towards honesty and integrity.
“We must redefine success and let our youths understand that wealth without hard work is fleeting and dangerous. Through mentorship, career guidance, and skill acquisition, we can build a generation that values diligence and uprightness,” he said.
Commending Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration for its proactive measures in tackling insecurity, the former lawmaker highlighted the impact of the Amotekun Corps in reducing crime across the state.
“Governor Aiyedatiwa has implemented several initiatives to strengthen security architecture in Ondo State. The establishment of Amotekun has significantly curtailed criminal activities, and with the Operation Daada initiative, there is better synergy among security agencies,” he stated.
Deputy Governor, Olayide Adelami, who represented Governor Aiyedatiwa at the summit, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to youth empowerment, stressing that equipping young people with essential skills remains a priority.
He cautioned youths against social vices such as cultism, internet fraud, drug abuse, kidnapping, and economic sabotage, warning that their choices today would shape their future.
In their remarks, the Director-General of CONYSSA, Ambassador Ade Mario, and the State Coordinator, Vincent Osewa, lauded Kolawole for his consistent support towards youth development.
The event also featured an interactive session, where participants deliberated on security concerns and strategies to enhance intelligence gathering while fostering youth inclusivity in governance.
