Yuletide: ODHA cautions NURTW members against violence

By Josephine Oguntoyinbo

Ondo State House of Assembly has cautioned National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), against causing a breakdown of law and order during and after the festive period.

Chairman, House Committee on Public Utilities and Transport, Stephen Abitogun gave the warning when he led other members to Parks Management Committee, in Akure.

Government constituted a 20-member committee to oversee all parks after suspending activities of the NURTW, operating in public motor parks in the state following the protracted crisis in the union.

Chairman of the House Committee, Stephen Abitogun said the intervention of government became necessary because some of their activities were becoming a threat to public peace and safety.

He noted that this period, there is always an influx of passengers and that anyone caught causing trouble in any park within the state will be picked and treated like a common criminal.

On tickets’ sale, he enjoined them to continue to work with the State Internal Revenue Service for transparency.

Others assured of legislative support to aid their operations.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Parks Management Committee, Mr. Jacob Adebo, popularly known as Idajo, while briefing the committee, promised to continue to maintain peace in the overall interest of all.

He thanked governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for the intervention, noting that this has laid to rest the possible loss of lives it would have caused.

He solicited the support of the committee to help recall NURTW back in the state, saying they have not been participating in national activities as a result of its suspension.
