The Amotekun corps in the South West Nigeria has flagged off joint patrol across Osun and Ondo States.

The exercise tagged “Operation Gba’le Gba’ko”  meaning we want to ensure sanity both at home and in the forest, on the road, on the sea, and everywhere within the Southwest part of this country, was launched at the Ondo/Osun border at Owena town at the weekend.

This involves a-24 hour patrol of the border towns from now till after the Christmas and the New year celebrations.

Declaring open the second edition of the exercise, Ondo State Commander of the Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye in collaboration with his Osun State counterpart, Brigadier General Aderounbi (retd), disclosed that about 340 victims of robbery and kidnap operations were rescued by Amotekun officials while 80 vehicles snatched by criminals were rescued last year.

Adeleye who is also the Chairman of the South West Amotekun, said the exercise was put together to tackle criminals who usually rob  travelers during the festive season.

He recalled that the security agency commenced the inter-border patrol with the huge success recorded and assured, that they would not leave anything for chance, noting that it has become the tradition of highway robbers to embark on aggressive operations during yuletide.

Akogun Adeleye who also doubles as the Special Adviser to the Ondo state Governor on Security Matters, disclosed that the operation is at the instance of Chairman of the South-West Governor’s Forum, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who has provided an enabling environment to ensure a peaceful yuletide season.

He disclosed, that the operation is in collaboration with all the sister security agencies.

However, Akogun charged people of the state including villagers, farmers and city settlers to keep the Corps abreast of any suspicious movement and activities in their domain.

He charged Amotekun officials to brace up for the challenges ahead, noting that  being an election year, there is  possibility for increased criminal activities especially politically and economically related crimes.

On his own, Osun State Amotekun Commander, Brig. Gen. Aderounbi, admonished residents of the communities to cooperate with the Corps so as to record another huge success of improved security of lives and property of people in the Southwest region.
