BEDC assures metering everyone

By Fatima Muraina

Determined to end the estimated and arbitrary billing for electricity, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has said that it will metre everyone who has access to electricity for an improved service delivery.
It also affirmed it’s readiness to implement the new tariff structure from first quarter of next year.
This is coming shortly after the federal government directed that all discos should ensure that prepared meters are installed to the citizenry.
BEDC Public Relations Officer in Ondo state, Mr Mike Barnabas disclosed this in an interview with The Hope in Akure.
Barnabas noted that the company has began metering, working and concentrating in some areas like Alagbaka, Ijapo axis, Okuta Elerinla and Ilesha road from one transformer to the other.
He said everybody will be metered the moment the company rolled out it’s services in any community, saying the era of people coming to apply for meter is over.
“As much as you do not have a meter or the meter is bad and we roll out in your area, you will go out and come back to see that you have been metered and you now begin to pay instalmentally.
“In as much that you are electricity user, everybody will be metered under the Meter Assessment Provider (MAP) programme except you do not want to be our customer anymore,” he explained.
Reacting on the non approval of a new tariff, Banarbas said the approval was given, but that the implementation was only shifted to early next year.
He said the new tariff is based on service delivery, noting that those who enjoy electricity more will pay more than those who do not.
