Alleged robbery: Court remands ex-convict

An Akure Magistrate’s Court sitting at Oke-Eda on Tuesday remanded a 40-year-old ex-convict, Suleiman Ibrahim, for alleged armed robbery two months after he was released from Olokuta Correctional Centre.

The State prosecutor, Olusegun Akeredolu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on July 4, 2022, at about 11:pm, at Ayedun Street Akure, in the Akure Magisterial District.

Mr Akeredolu said the defendant, who was released from the Olokuta prison in May 2022, had served a three-year jail term in connection with an armed robbery incident.

He said ”the defendant again armed with dangerous weapons  robbed one Grace Yemisi  breaking into her dwelling-house at Silas Secondary School, Ayedun, Akure and stole Alumaco window frame at knife point.

“The defendant was arrested by the men of Amotekun operatives attached to Ayedun Division, when the complainant called for help.

Akeredolu said the offences contravened Sections 410, 411, 1 (1) and (2) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006 and the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap R. 11, Vol. 14, LFN, 2004.

Akeredolu, however moved an Ex parte Motion, dated July 22, in which he sought for remand of Ibrahim. He cited Section 299 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Ondo State 2006.

The defence counsel, Prosper Odimejwe did not oppose the prosecution’s remand application.

The Magistrate, F.A Aduroja , ordered that the file should be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The plea of the defendant was not taken.

Aduroja ordered that the defendant should be kept at Ondo Correctional Centre.

She adjourned the case until September 30, 2022. for DPP’s advice.
