As part of efforts to ensure accountability, Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola has been urged to urgently publish the statement of accounts of all the local governments in the state.
The Minority Leader in the Osun State House of Assembly, Nurudeen Babajide, made the call while fielding questions from journalists in Osogbo.
Babajide said it’s no more news that all 30 local government councils and the area offices in the State had been without any recognized leadership since February 2021.
He noted that this development has greatly affected governance at the local government as “strangers” were leading the councils.
Babajide lamented that the people of the State were finding it so hard to understand why it’s taking eternity for the current State Government under Governor Gboyega Oyetola to constitute Caretaker Committee or even more appropriately, organize council polls as witnessed recently in the neighbouring Oyo State.
He said, “as representative of the People, I call on Governor Gboyega Oyetola to immediately make public statements of accounts of all local government since February 2021.
“This is important to know how much the councils have expended on personnel costs and how much is left in their respective accounts.
“It should be noted that Oyetola had via a memo frozen all the accounts of the Councils on February 5, 2021. This practically put an end to governance in the third tier of government.
“Since Osun State Government under Oyetola have decided to paralyse the closest governments to the people by assuming the sole controller of their accounts, we call on the Federal government to immediately call the Oyetola-led government to order to stop milking the funds that belong to local government.”
