By Maria Famakinwa

Hair, they say, is the crown of every woman. In Nigeria, for instance, the woman is expected to grow her natural hair in order to portray her feminity. However, the same cannot be said of now because the narrative for women and hairdo beauty has changed.

Whether male or female, young or old, it now seems as though if you have to make an appearance in style and stand out in a crowd, a tinted low haircut is the answer. Of course, a low haircut used to be a standard definition of clean look for men, while women of all colours all over the world could never talk about beauty without the traditional long hair. But the advent of modernisation and level of exposure has affected every facet of our lives including our sense of dressing. Hence, the need to embrace what is in vogue.

She said: “Like many fashion statements in the past, low-cut/tinted hair has now assumed a prominent place among ladies with loud expression. These days, fashionable women look for ways to enhance their looks, and like every other fashion, hair-do is dynamic, as it changes from time to time and it is expected of every fashionable lady to move with the trend. I have since discovered that my tinted hair brings out the hidden beauty in me and gives me good compliments on a daily basis, especially from the opposite sex. That is to say that any little thing matters and goes a long way to pass statement to others about you.”

Sharing a similar view, a beautician, Mrs Sola Olaniyi, who hinted that looking good is good business for women who could interpret the word of changing taste and fashion, added that women with tinted hairs understand what it is to beat the latest fashion and make them look charming.

Her words: “Fashion, in this age and time is different from what it used to be.  Women are now bold and more expressive compared to how it was in the past. Gone are the days when tinted hairs were worn as wigs and weav-ons, or coloured hair seen as un- African.

“Interestingly, women have attempted to appear more beautiful with each passing generation, as their efforts have recorded a huge change in the standard of beauty women now adhere to. Women have started to not just go on low-cut, but also dye their hair in colours that would ordinarily have offended custom and traditions. Nonetheless, these colours have a way of adding glamour to fashion and give women a different youthful beautiful look. I am wearing grey tinted hair today but can change to another colour tomorrow. If I have a function to attend I can tint my hair to match  the colour of the clothes I would be wearing to such occasion as many ladies do. My husband loves it and I am okay with it. Ladies who truly understand fashion definition go for tinted hairs,” she said.

In the submission of an undergraduate, Oyinyechi Ani, she tinted her hair because it was her choice. “A lot of women have very tight schedules daily and find it challenging to measure up with the task of maintaining long hair. So, for them, it’s easier to go on a low haircut and then have it tinted in the colour of choice to look radiant.

“For me, good looks do not revolve around a particular hairdo or style. So, ladies who now chose to go on tinted low cut hairs for this reason feel the need to wear a completely new look from the long hair look to appear more attractive. After all,  the tinted hair can be changed by wearing wigs if they want. Ladies tint their hairs to look attractive, express beauty in a unique way to move on with the fashion train.”

Also, a 68-year-old grandmother, Mrs Ibiyinka, sighted with wine colour tinted hair said that she loves tinting her hair with different colours to give her a youthful look.

Her words: “I hate being addressed as an old woman even though all my children are married with children. To be sincere with you, I don’t joke with fashion. I also love the feelings that come with tinted hair.  It is a way of expression to me and makes me feel relevant in the fashion world. Age is one’s state of mind. If you feel you are old, so be it, but I am not and I need to make myself attractive.”

Asked if her children supported her, she said: “I don’t need anyone to support me in order to make myself happy because what makes me happy can make others sad. Though, all my children like it except the only male I have, but that does not change my love for tinted hair. Aside giving me good look, I love the feelings that come with it. There is nothing bad in try something new. If I did not tell you my age, you will hardly believe that I am that old. This is because I take good care of myself. I hate to see young ladies who are not looking beautiful. We need to be updated in every aspect of life including fashion especially for women, otherwise, such will be outdated. Fashion is dynamic and we need to go with the trend,” she said.
