AFCON qualifiers: Iwobi, Osimhen hand Peseiro first win

Goals from Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen were all the Super Eagles needed to come from behind to beat sierra Leon in the Africa Cup Nations qualifier and handed Jose Peseiro his first victory as the team head coach.

Sierra Leon’s Jonathan Morsay had headed into the net from brilliant cross to put the visitor’s ahead in the 11th minute of the 2023 qualify African Cup of Nations billed for Ivory Coast contest decided at the Mashood Abiola National Stadium Abuja.

The match was played without spectators.

Alex Iwobi brought Super Eagles to the game when he struck home to the left corner of the net from Moses Simon pass to draw level for Super Eagles.

Eagles readjusted and they were more compact in the midfield to the attack, which have them some leverages over their visitors.

Both sides continued hunting for lead were not successful,until 41st minute when Victor Osimhen pounced on Moses Simon header from Ola Aina cross to put Eagles ahead going into the break. The second half produced no further goal from either sides . Though many goal scoring chances were rued in the second half.

Recalled, Super Eagles have failed to defeat Leone Stars in their last two meetings.

Nigeria were held 4-4 by Sierra Leone at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium,Benin City on November 11, 2021and four days later played out a goaless draw in Freetown during qualifiers for the 2021 AFCON.

The Portuguese had his first outing with Nigeria during the 2-1 loss to Mexico in a friendly on may 28 and later led the team to another 1-0 defeat to Ecuador last Thursday in another friendly match in USA.
