Ayomide shines at Swimming Championship

Emmanuel Ayomide has grabbed three gold, one Silver and two bronze medals to ensure Unique Secondary School, Akure emerged winners of the two-  day under 14 Swimming Championship held at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure.

The Championship was put together by the state sport council and sponsored by Dr Owoyemi Sunday.

Unique Secondary School performed brilliantly over nine other competitors with total six points to coast home with the most precious shield in the senior category, while Oyemekun Grammar School came second with four points and Ijapo High School  gannered three points to coast home with 3rd position.

Ten Secondary schools battled for honour in 50 metres freestyle, 50 metres backstroke, 200 hundred metres individuals medley, 50 metres, backstroke and 50 metres butterfly in both boys and girls senior and junior categories.

According to the organisers, the purpose of the Championship was to catch the students young.

We don’t want to be caught unaware, so we are working hard to discover talents to replace the aging athletes.

They said the talents discovered at the Championship will be monitored and developed to stardom.

They will be prepared to represent the state both at National and international competitions.

Earlier, the General Manager, Ondo State Sports Council, Mr Henry Babatunde disclosed that the aim of the competition was to identify the hidden talents in the students at the early stage.

He urged parents to take note of their children’s talents and encourage them to develop.

He added that sports have a large window of opportunities by which talented students and young ones can make a living.

He encouraged youths to embrace sports as a vocation towards future economic empowerment.

All the participating schools were later presented with certificate of participation and prizes .
