Court remands ‘fake soldier’ for impersonation, robbery

An Akure Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of a 29-year-old man, Saliu Ajayi, at a custodial centre, for allegedly stealing a motorcycle. and impersonating a military officer.
The police arraigned Saliu for allegedly committing the offences on September 20, 2022 around 12:10pm, along ldanre road in Akure.
The defendant was said to have robbed his victim of an unregistered motorcycle, while dressed in army uniform.
The police prosecutor, Sulaiman Adebayo told the court that the defendant, while dressed in army camouflage and pullover, stopped his victim on the road, on the pretense that he was an Intelligence officer of the Armed Forces.
The prosecutor said luck ran out on him when he was quizzed at Army checkpoint along Ondo road and asked to identify himself.
He further said that the defendant who could not give satisfactory response was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution.
Adebayo tendered the army’s accoutrements found on him and the unregistered motorcycle.
The defendant pleaded guilty to one of the three counts charge preferred against him.
The prosecutor, therefore, prayed the Court to remand the defendant, adding that a date should be given to prove the defendant’s guilt on counts two and three.
The defense counsel, Joseph Arinju prayed the court to grant his client bail .
Magistrate Temitayo Owolabi ordered the remand of the defendant at Olokuta prison after listening to the incontrovertible proof of the prosecutor.
He, thereafter adjourned the case till November 25, 2022 for further hearing.
