Politics is often mistaken for the pursuit of personal ambition. Yet history reserves its finest pages for leaders who labour for causes greater than themselves. Such leaders understand that the true measure of political stewardship is not merely the offices one occupies, but the institutions one strengthens and the victories one secures for those entrusted with the nation’s future.
This philosophy appears to define the current political disposition of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State.
Remarkably, Governor Aiyedatiwa will not be on the ballot in the forthcoming general election, yet his political energy suggests otherwise. While many office holders naturally retreat into administrative routine after securing their own mandate, Aiyedatiwa has chosen a different path. He has become a field marshal of party unity, investing enormous political capital in ensuring that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and every APC candidate receive overwhelming support across Ondo State.
Leadership, after all, is not measured by what one wins for oneself, but by what one willingly sacrifices to help others achieve.
This explains the governor’s insistence on repositioning the party’s quarterly stakeholders’ meetings. His directive that the membership be rejigged to accommodate every critical stakeholder across the state is more than administrative housekeeping; it is a strategic political recalibration. By ensuring that no genuine stakeholder is left outside the decision-making process, he is reinforcing the foundation upon which enduring electoral victories are built.
These quarterly meetings have evolved into the intellectual parliament of the APC in Ondo State. Drawn from all 203 wards, party leaders gather to evaluate political realities, harmonise strategies, identify challenges and develop collective responses ahead of elections. A broadened stakeholders’ structure guarantees wider consultation, deeper inclusion and stronger ownership of the party’s objectives.
The Governor clearly understands that elections are rarely won by isolated political gladiators. They are won through organised consensus, disciplined mobilisation and a united structure speaking with one voice.
Equally significant is his support for the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, whose grassroots architecture has become one of the party’s most potent mobilisation instruments. With coordinators extending from the state level to polling units, and an expanding network of grassroots ambassadors across every ward, the organisation is steadily transforming political communication from elite conversations into community engagement.
Rather than allowing misinformation to define public perception, the Renewed Hope Ambassadors have been tasked with carrying the message of governance directly to the people, explaining the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda while receiving feedback from communities. It is an approach that recognises that democracy flourishes when communication flows in both directions.
Yet political mobilisation alone rarely sustains electoral goodwill. Infrastructure remains the most persuasive language of governance.
Governor Aiyedatiwa appears to appreciate this timeless truth.
Across Ondo State, his administration continues to open rural communities through newly proposed strategic road networks designed to unlock economic opportunities, improve agricultural transportation and reconnect previously neglected hinterlands to urban commercial centres. Every kilometre of road constructed becomes not merely asphalt upon the earth, but a pathway to economic inclusion.
Within Akure, the state capital is witnessing an ambitious programme of urban renewal. Road expansion projects, modern flyover infrastructure, beautification initiatives and environmental improvements are gradually redefining the city’s landscape. Beyond aesthetics lies a deeper economic philosophy: competitive cities attract investment, stimulate commerce and inspire civic pride.
Infrastructure, therefore, becomes both development and political communication. It silently reminds citizens that governance is not an abstract promise but a visible reality.
Beyond roads and urban renewal, the administration has continued investments in education, healthcare, agriculture, rural development, youth empowerment and security, while collaborating closely with the Federal Government on strategic infrastructure that benefits the people of Ondo State. These interventions collectively reinforce public confidence in governance and strengthen the bond between the electorate and the governing party.
The overwhelming victory recorded by the APC in the recent Ondo South Senatorial District by-election has further demonstrated the effectiveness of the party’s grassroots machinery. While every election possesses its own peculiar dynamics, the outcome offered evidence of a cohesive political structure capable of translating organisation into electoral success.
Perhaps the greatest lesson from Governor Aiyedatiwa’s current political conduct is that genuine leadership places collective victory above personal comfort. He has embraced the responsibility of strengthening the party, consolidating its structures and preparing it for future contests, despite having no personal electoral stake in the immediate presidential race.
That is the conduct of a loyal party man.
As the 2027 presidential election approaches, every APC support group, caucus, interest bloc, youth organisation, women’s group, political tendency, aggrieved stakeholder and loyalist should recognise the larger picture before the party. Temporary differences should give way to permanent objectives. Individual ambitions should surrender to collective success.
Victory possesses a remarkable capacity to reconcile competing interests. A united APC, working with discipline and common purpose, stands a stronger chance of securing electoral success than a divided family consumed by internal rivalry.
The message is therefore simple: let every structure speak with one voice. Let every ward work with one purpose. Let every stakeholder place the party above personality.
For when victory is secured, continuity becomes possible; and within continuity lies the opportunity to accommodate aspirations, reward loyalty and advance the collective interests of all who have laboured for the progress of the party.
Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa appears to understand this enduring political truth. He is not merely governing Ondo State; he is strengthening the political architecture upon which the future electoral fortunes of the APC may well depend.
History has always remembered such leaders, not only for the offices they held, but for the victories they made possible for others.
