Akure lawmaker, Ologede condemns killing of farmers in constituency
…Calls for urgent security measures to halt incessant attacks by gunmen
The lawmaker representing Akure North Constituency at the Ondo State House of Assembly, Kolawole Ologede, has condemned the various attacks on farmers and residents of Ago Oyinbo in the Igbatoro Familugba community of the state.
This call follows another attack on a farmer, identified as Iya Samuel, and a motorcyclist, Mr Sunday Oladele, by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack occurred on the evening of 7th September 2024, when both victims, Iya Samuel and Mr Sunday Oladele, were shot dead while returning from the farm. The okada rider, who was conveying her home, was also feared dead.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but tensions between local farmers and Fulani herdsmen have been escalating in recent months, with two farmers already killed this year.
The lawmaker condemned the killings and expressed deep concern over the worsening insecurity in rural parts of the state.
He called for urgent action from the state government and security agencies to protect the lives of farmers in the area.
“It is heartbreaking to see innocent farmers, who toil day and night to feed our communities, being targeted and killed. These senseless attacks must stop, and I am calling on the state government to deploy more security personnel, especially the Amotekun Corps, to rural areas like Ago Oyinbo in Igbatoro Familugba.”
The lawmaker also urged community leaders and residents to collaborate with security agencies in identifying the perpetrators of the attacks.
It will be recalled that in August last year, a farmer, Segun, was attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen, and another farmer, Paul, was killed in September 2023 while working on their farmlands.
