Monthly sanitation: 80 arrested

Over 80 people were at the weekend, arrested by officials of the Ondo State Waste Management Authority for violating sanitation laws.
It was reported that the offenders were picked from various locations across Akure metropolis for violating the laws guiding the monthly sanitation exercise.
Their offences ranged from dirty environments, roaming the streets, illegal dumping of refuse, and playing football during the three hours exercise.
On sighting the sanitation monitoring team, some of the violators attempted to run away but luck, however, ran out of them as they were arrested by the determined officers.
They were later taken to the Magistrate Court, along Ondo road, Akure, to face the consequences of their actions.
The Permanent Secretary, Ondo State Ministry of Environment, Mr Akin Asaniyan who led the team round town to ascertain the level of compliance, enjoined residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse on drainages which he noted could lead to flooding.
The General Manager, Waste Management Authority, Mrs Ayo Adeyemo who tasked residents on proper waste disposal, said cleanliness is next to godliness.
On his part, the state Chairman, committee on waste restructuring, Mr Kehinde Badejo appealed to citizens to take the monthly exercise seriously.
Areas visited in Akure during the exercise included Lafe, Oshinle, Oja-Oba, Owo-Ilesha express way and Shagari Village, where most people were spotted complying with the monthly sanitation’s directive to keep their environments clean.
