ODSG tasks companies on environmental safety standards
As part of efforts to ensure that the activities of companies operating in the state are in line with its green environment policy, Ondo State government has directed them to obtain environmental clearance from the State Environmental Protection Agency, ODSEPA .
The directive was given by the Special Adviser to Ondo State Governor on Environment, Mr Oyeniyi Oseni during an engagement with the representatives of quarry operators in the state in Akure.
According to a Press Release by ODSEPA’S Director of Media and Advocacy, Prince Bolu Ajijo, the directive was issued in order to ensure that the chemical and magazine storages of these operators were in standard practices to minimize incident of explosions and hazards in and around quarry operations.
The Special Adviser gave instances where chemicals and magazines poorly kept have caused serious havoc to the operators and immediate environment.
Oseni specifically mentioned the unfortunate incident that occurred along Akure -Owo Road two years ago that involved a truck ladden with chemicals meant for quarry operations that exploded due to poor storage management.
He told the quarry operators that it was the duty of the agency as an environmental watch dog to ensure the safety of the operators, the people living around their operating environment and ecosystem and ensuring that such ugly incident did not happened in the state.
The Special Adviser who commanded the State Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN for resuscitating the State Environmental Protection Agency ODSEPA after many years in comatose promised the agency will do everything possible to cover lost ground and bridge the yarning gap in sustainable environment in the state.
