Nigerians have been urged to reintroduce Trade by Barter for food sufficiency.
Ondo state Chairman of the Agricultural Commodities’ Association (OSACA), Mr Gbenga Obaweya gave the advice in a chat with The Hope yesterday at the flag off of trade by barter organised by farmers in the state.
He said the move is an additional dimension to make it easier for people having goods without cash to get what they want.
He noted that the idea will be advantageous to the poor to ensure that people have food on their tables at all times.
Also the Vice Chairman, Women of OSACA, Mrs Oluwatobi Olatoye described the system as a good concept practised in the olden days, but was abandoned shortly when money came into being.
She said the concept is for people to exchange their agricultural produce, good or services with others to meet their needs without cash .
She explained that farmers have been practicing but decided to flag it off to encourage others.
This, she opined has worked perfectly within them considering the scarcity of money.
Olatoye encouraged cooperative societies, groups, individuals, communities and government at all levels to embrace the system to cushion effects of the hardship confronting the masses.
