Trailer crushes 2 to death in Ekiti

Ikole-Ekiti, headquarters of Ikole local government area of Ekiti State was thrown into mourning, following the death of two notable youths in the community, who were crushed to death by a trailer.

The incident which almost resulted into break down of law and order occurred in front of a popular drinking joint in the community.

The aggrieved youths of the community who staged a protest to express their grievances over the incident, blocked the popular Ikole/Omuo-Ekiti highway, which made several travellers stranded for several hours.

It was learnt that the victims were on a bike, heading towards Odo-Ayedun Ekiti, while the trailer was coming from Ifaki-Ekiti and heading towards the direction of  Omuo-Ekiti, when they were crushed by the truck loaded with yams and other food stuffs.

According to an eye witness, the driver of the trailer lost its control and rammed into the popular joint after crushing the two victims,

Property estimated about several millions of naira were said to have been destroyed by the truck.

One of the victims was said to have died instantly, while the other one was rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Ido-Ekiti, where he was later confirmed dead by the doctors.

Several persons who sustained injury during the incident were also rushed to the Ekiti State Specialist Hospital, Ikole-Ekiti.

Angered, the youths in the area took to the street, barricaded the road, set burnfire beside the main roads and vowed that henceforth, trailers would no longer be allowed to ply the road.

The protest which lasted  several hours hampered free movement of vehicles coming from Abuja and those heading towards Kabba- Okene- Lokoja roads.

One of the motorists who spoke with The Hope Metro, and identified his name as Sunday Abidakun, lamented that they had been stranded on the road since the early hours of the day.

He called on the Ekiti State Police Command to wade into the matter and prevail on the protesting youths to open the road for the travellers.
