Gusau hails Tinubu’s Student Loan Scheme, promises NFF reforms

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for policies aimed at improving the welfare and future prospects of Nigerian youths, particularly the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

Gusau described the student-loan scheme as a laudable intervention capable of transforming the lives of thousands of young Nigerians, saying it was helping students from less-privileged backgrounds pursue their education despite financial challenges.

Speaking in Abuja on the importance of government policies that promote youth development, the NFF president said he had personally encountered more than 2,000 undergraduates benefiting from the NELFUND initiative.

He said the programme was providing students with an opportunity to continue their academic pursuits without financial difficulties forcing them to abandon their education.

According to Gusau, investments in education and human capital should be viewed as investments in Nigeria’s future, particularly at a time when the country is seeking to expand opportunities for its growing youth population.

The NFF president’s comments come as the football federation prepares to introduce significant reforms to the statutes governing the administration of the sport in Nigeria.

Gusau assured football stakeholders that the proposed reforms would strengthen the administrative and legal framework of Nigerian football, with the objective of improving efficiency, transparency and the overall development of the game.

He said the reforms would also seek to ensure that Nigerian football remains responsive to modern realities and aligned with international best practices.

The NFF leadership has stated its commitment to improving governance within the sport and creating an environment in which players, coaches, administrators and other stakeholders can make meaningful contributions to the development of football in the country.

The proposed statutory changes are therefore expected to attract close attention from football stakeholders, particularly as Nigeria continues its pursuit of greater success on the international stage.

For Gusau, supporting policies that expand educational opportunities for young Nigerians while pursuing institutional reforms in football forms part of a broader vision of strengthening the country through education, sports and youth development.
